In a Headwind, turn the yoke in the direction the wind is coming from. In a tailwind, imagine the wind pushing the yoke in the direction it is going.

What happens (Please cite any FARs) when my SID or ODP ends at an altitude lower than the MEA/MOCA of the airway I intend to join. Example, the North Town 5 at KVGT (NOTWN5.LAS) ends at 7000' and I want to continue on V394 southbound (MEA 9000'). {I know the procedure says at or above, but let us assume that the best climb I could get only got me to 7000'.} Bigger picture, how to get on an airway after takeoff with a really high MEA if the ODP and SID do not allow enough time to climb. An answer might be found in FAH 8083-16B at the bottom of page 2-35 (2-27 for VFR), but I would like something more official and clear. When does "Takeoff from an airport" end? 25 miles? 46 miles? Initial cruising altitude? Surprisingly, there is very little to no information about how to actually get onto an airway at the correct/legal altitude from takeoff. Might make a good video?

Love hearing his voice as "They" (including my instructor of course) totally helped me "ACE" all of my training, written exam, and of course Designated Examiner flight. I understand there are others, but John & Martha are the "KING's" LOL !!!! Forgive the pun 🙂 - His sense of humor in the courses (as well as the other's) make you watch it over and over !!!!

I’m thinking about investing in King schools for the CFI program. Still contemplating if it’s worth the study and the time and the money. Doesn’t seem like many CFI make a solid living like many years ago. Seemed like a decent part-time job.

Well, the FAA was looking for an answer of 43 minutes, but that’s not factually accurate. This is because with the time of climb, there is an amount of distance that is also utilized. This is found in the POH time distance fuel to climb chart. So the distance between the two airports become less in a sense because you have covered distance within the three minutes from the departure airport and the time in cruise with the ground speed of 80 kts which is going to be less than the total. Probably in this example very minuscule, but you would be at 80 kn for something like 37 or 38 miles not the full 40. so, the actual calculation should be the distance to climb, according to the POH at the recommended airspeed, the distance in cruise at the figure speed of 80 kn then, unless you can maintain that airspeed descending to pattern altitude, you have to subtract that distance from the cruise portion and recalculate the time. So in short, you have to add time to climb, time in Cruise and time to descend. Then a ballpark figure of three minutes in the pattern. Sounds complex, but that is how you calculate a true ETE. But the time required to fly 40 miles on the test is close enough for government work.
